Brendan Rodgers has confirmed Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has been offered a new contract by the club. The 34-year-old’s current deal at Anfield expires at the end of the season and there has been intense speculation over his future. He was dropped to the bench by Rodgers for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Stoke, amid reports of a fallout between the pair, which Gerrard quickly denied. But Rodgers has now moved to assure Gerrard, who joined the club’s academy as an eight-year-old, he sees a future for him at Liverpool and has revealed the club have opened talks with the ex-England skipper about extending his stay on Merseyside.Rodgers has also promised to give the long-serving midfielder as much time as he needs to decide whether to put pen-to-paper or seek a final challenge elsewhere.“The latest is he has been offered a contract here and at this moment in time that is where it is at,” said the Reds boss.“In what he has done in his 16 years here (in the first team) he is a man who deserves the utmost respect and time to consider that.“It is a big move not just in his life but in terms of committing where his next contract is going to be.“There are probably many things Steven would have to think about in a decision like this but it certainly won’t be money.“I have spoken to him often enough and at length and that won’t be the case.“Between now and the end of the season he deserves that opportunity to have a think of where it is at but one thing is clear, I love working with Steven Gerrard.“He is arguably the best player who has ever played in the Premier League, I have enjoyed every minute of working with him here and I hope that continues.“But I need to give him the opportunity to take as long as it takes in order for him to decide what he wants to do next.“I saw some things yesterday which were unfortunate about a rift between he and I but if there were two words I would use to describe our relationship it would be ‘honesty’ and ‘respect’.” Steven Gerrard 1
SU and several partners will test a variety of air barrier panels using a specially designed two-story “house” wired to monitor each panel’s performance during the four seasonsSyracuse University announced this week that it and several partners are about to launch a three-year, $2 million study of air barrier systems at a campus laboratory specially designed to analyze and control unintended air flow between outdoors and indoors. The research team is a big one. In addition to SU faculty and students, the partners include the industry group Air Barrier Association of America, which will install panels of various materials and properties; Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which will analyze data from instruments it installs in the lab to measure temperature, moisture, and air movement; the U.S. Department of Energy; the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority; and the Syracuse Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems, whose mission is to create jobs through its research in environmental and energy technologies. The laboratory, formally known as the Building Envelope Systems Test Laboratory, resembles a two-story house. (Click here to view a recent report by WSYR-TV.) In place of windows, however, the building features 34 openings for test panels, each 4ft. wide by 9ft. high. Located in an open area on SU’s South Campus, the building gets full exposure to the distinctly seasonal weather common to Central New York. (We’re talking cold winters.)“This project represents a new approach to doing research, with an industry and government laboratory and a university collaborating together,” Laverne Dalgleish, executive director of the Air Barrier Association of America, told SU’s news service. “This is research that is international in scope and that will be used around the world.”
Ending speculation about coach Duncan Fletcher’s role in the five one-dayers against England, Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni today said that the Zimbabwean will stay as “boss” of the team until the 2015 World Cup.After the 1-3 Test debacle, Team India witnessed a major reshuffle on the coaching front with bowling coach Joe Dawes and fielding consultant Trevor Penney forced to go on a break and BCCI appointing Ravi Shastri as the Team Director. But on the eve of the the first ODI, Dhoni said that Fletcher is still “the boss”.”He will lead us into the World Cup,” said Dhoni referring to the coach.”Also he is still the boss. We have Ravi Shastri who will look into everything, but Fletcher is the boss. It’s not as if his powers or his position have been curtailed. I don?t know what you feel from the outside, but operations still remain the same. We have a few other support staff coming into the dressing room, but overall the operation remains the same.”After taking over his director’s role, Shastri did mention that the new coaching staff, including Fletcher, will report to him during the limited-overs series. After Dawes’ and Penney’s ouster, former India all-rounder Sanjay Bangar and ex-pacer Bharat Arun were appointed assistant coaches with R. Sridhar as the fielding coach. Dhoni though clarified that Shastri’s role is more of a manager.”Ravi is here to oversee the operations from the outside, what he feels and everything else. It’s good to have him. He is a very proud (former) Indian cricketer, and at the same time, very positive. He believes a lot in fighting and having the right instincts, going over and giving his hundred percent. It is obviously good to have him. He also speaks the same language and can interact a lot with the players. Same is the case with other support staff so it is good to have them here,” said Dhoni.advertisementWhen asked if he was happy with the timing of the changes, the skipper replied, “It’s a bit tough on Trevor (Penney) and Joe (Dawes), especially when fielders drop catches and the fielding coach has to miss the series. But let’s hope for the best. We are welcoming the new guys because that is very important. They will be part of the dressing-room family as of now. We will have to give them some time to adjust to how we operate, and see what kind of input they bring to the table.”
TORONTO — Here’s a look at reaction to serial killer Bruce McArthur pleading guilty to eight counts of first-degree murder:___“Bruce McArthur has pled guilty, and that’s closure. I’m not considering it a win. It’s the right outcome … it was sparing the community, sparing the family members, of potentially seeing graphic evidence tendered in court.” — Det. David Dickinson, Toronto homicide squad___“It was a terrible case.” — Justice John McMahon, following McArthur’s guilty plea___“These losses have forever changed the lives of families, friends, loved ones and have left our communities shaken and aggrieved. The fact that it remained unknown and unseen for so many years is its own inconceivable tragedy.” — The 519, a community organization serving Toronto’s LGBTQ communities____“It’s actually quite relieving, I think, because we have an answer now. He’s pled guilty and I think that puts the community and the family at rest to say that we have closure now, finally.” — Haran Vijayanathan, executive director at the Alliance for South Asian AIDS Prevention___“Throughout this case, I have said our city deserves two things: justice and answers. I know that the public continues to have many questions related to this case, and so do I.” — Toronto Mayor John Tory.____ The Canadian Press
The competition this year was hotter than ever — with RZA, Ellie Goulding, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Waka Flocka Flame all up for the honor — but Liam Hemsworth and Jhené Aiko have been crowned PETA’s Sexiest Vegan Celebrities of 2016.Other contenders included Bellamy Young, Rooney Mara, and Casey Affleck.“[A]fter all the information I gathered about the mistreatment of animals, I couldn’t continue to eat meat,” says Hemsworth, whose girlfriend, Miley Cyrus, took home last year’s title. He also credits his Hunger Games co-star — and past winner of the Sexiest Vegan Celebrity contest — Woody Harrelson for encouraging him to go vegan, insisting that he’s never felt better since making the switch. “[T]here are no negatives to eating like this,” he adds. “I feel nothing but positive, mentally and physically. I love it.”Aiko credits vegan meals with giving her the energy to keep performing, from her powerful tribute to fellow vegan Prince at Coachella to the long days on tour and in the studio. “Having grown up with a love for and a connection to all animals as well as having been educated on the health benefits of a plant-based lifestyle, it made sense for me to go vegan,” she says. “I have more energy, my skin looks better, and, as an extra bonus, I’m happier!”In addition to praising vegan meals, Hemsworth and Aiko also promote adopting animals from shelters: The actor adopted a dog last year, and Aiko starred in an “Adopt, Don’t Shop” campaign for peta2, PETA’s youth division, in 2014.Other past winners of PETA’s annual contest include Ellen Page, Jared Leto, Kristen Bell, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Russell Brand, Carrie Underwood, Natalie Portman, Shania Twain, Leona Lewis, Andre 3000, Tobey Maguire, and Alicia Silverstone. For more information, please visit PETA.org.
