Simenon scoops Grimes prize

first_img One of the most admirable dual-purpose horses in training, the dual Royal Ascot hero has been campaigned exclusively on the Flat in recent times, finishing second in last season’s Gold Cup at the Royal meeting and fourth in the Melbourne Cup. He has also run in Japan, Hong Kong and Dubai. Simenon recorded his first victory over timber since May 2012 with success in the Kevin McManus Bookmakers Grimes Hurdle at Tipperary. Settled in mid-division through the early stages of his jumping return by Paul Townend as Little King Robin cut out the pace, the Willie Mullins-trained seven-year-old was still full of running three out and soon joined issue with Darwins Fox from the second-last. The pair took the final flight almost as one, but Simenon proved the stronger on the run to the line, winning by a length and a quarter as the 10-11 favourite. Townend said: “His jumping over the first couple was deadly and when I needed at the last he produced. “It was a true gallop from start to finish, he has loads of class and it’s nice to win that. “I knew the other horse stayed very well but it’s nice to get him back to winning ways – he’s a real flag-bearer for the yard.” center_img Press Associationlast_img read more

Freedman insists he is the right man for Bolton despite thrashing at Fulham

first_imgDougie Freedman insisted he remained confident of turning Bolton’s fortunes around after their 4-0 defeat against Fulham. The thrashing at Craven Cottage continued Wanderers’ miserable start to the season – they are second from bottom and have been blighted by defensive errors. However, asked if expected to be given more time to improve results, Freedman said: “I think so, because you’ve got to look at whole picture. Is changing managers every five minutes the answer?“I feel very confident I can do the job. We’ve got characters in there and spirit and a good attitude.“It’s a difficult job but I believe I’m the man to pull us away from this. I’m confident we can do it.“Everyone’s entitled to their opinion and I understand the frustration of the fans, I really do.”Goals from Hugo Rodallega, Fernando Amorebieta, Lasse Vigen Christensen and Tim Hoogland gave Fulham an emphatic first home league win of the season.“We set our stall out to be compact and once again we gifted them a goal. We’ve got to give ourselves a chance,” said Freedman.“We didn’t do enough up top and then left ourselves wide open. It all boils down to the fact that we have to stop giving away silly goals.”Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebooklast_img read more

RWC 2023: South Africa bids for the rights

first_imgAs hosts of the Rugby World Cup, the country would make rugby proud, the South African bid team told the sport’s world body. Revenue projects and fan numbers were also placed higher than those earned in England in 2015.Deputy president Ramaphosa with South Africa’s two World Cup winning captains. (Image: SA Rugby)Sulaiman PhilipThree years after South African rugby was welcomed back on to the international stage, the country hosted and, memorably, won the IRB Rugby World Cup. After three unsuccessful attempts, South Africa has again bid to host the 2023 World Cup.Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa headed a delegation that included South African Rugby Union president Mark Alexander and CEO Jurie Roux, as well as Sport and Recreation Minister Thulas Nxesi. Ramaphosa said South Africa alone could host a tournament that would make rugby proud. “We want to share our passion with the world and provide the sport with a carnival that’s vibrantly African, which will engulf our country, capture a continent and inspire the world.”Speaking of the iconic moments in 1995, Ramaphosa reminded the adjudicating panel that the 1995 World Cup helped to bind South Africa into one nation. “In 2023, we hope to use the Rugby World Cup to inspire and unite not only South Africans, but the global community of nations. In a world facing the threat of polarisation, intolerance and indifference, South Africa is best poised to demonstrate that rugby can break barriers, create hope and unite humanity. The people and government of South Africa are therefore wholeheartedly behind SA Rugby’s bid. We have proven we can deliver.”South Africa’s bid will be judged against those from Ireland and Fance, both rugby-loving nations. However, just as it was for the FIFA World Cup 2010, awarding South Africa the sporting spectacular will allow World Rugby, the sport’s international governing body, to reach new fans across Africa. The South African team believe the country can deliver a lucrative tournament that will beat income from the 2015 tournament in England, which doubled returns from the 2011 tournament, hosted by New Zealand.England attracted 2.47 million ticketed fans while New Zealand hosted 1.6 million in 2011. The South African bid projections suggested 2.9 million ticketed fans across the eight stadiums earmarked as host stadiums in seven cities.Brett Gosper, World Rugby CEO, said the 2015 tournament generated £250-million (R4.5-billion) in tickets revenues, with an £80-million surplus to World Rugby and £15-million surplus to the Rugby Football Union, England’s governing rugby body, to be invested in the development of rugby.South Africa’s bid advances the world body’s intent to create a global sport for all, while remaining true to its values of discipline, integrity, respect, solidarity and passion. For South African school children, the bid aims to introduce a million children to the game through the governing bodies’ Get into Rugby programme. The 2023 hosts will be announced on 15 November.Would you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? Going solo helped expose BJP’s ‘darker side’: Akhilesh

first_imgThe decision by the Opposition parties to go solo in the Uttar Pradesh bypolls has helped expose the BJP’s “darker side” and effectively conveyed the message of its “failure”, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav said. Fresh from the SP’s victory in the bypolls, Mr. Yadav also said that he will revamp the party soon. The SP turned out to be a major gainer in the U.P. Assembly bypolls for 11 seats, wresting a seat each from the ruling BJP and the BSP, while the NDA got eight, one less than it held. Hitting out at the BJP, Mr. Yadav said the people voted against the party and the politics of hatred, casteism and corruption. “The BJP used to shield itself from its failure on issues related to the common man by making allegations whenever we formed an alliance to take on the party jointly. They used to say that all political parties have ganged up against the BJP and the message of their failure could not be properly conveyed,” Mr. Yadav told PTI in his first interview after the bypoll outcome. ‘Reality of BJP’“Now the same thing is being said by Opposition parties separately and people have got to know the darker side of the BJP as it could not counter the Opposition onslaught. The more people know the reality of the BJP, the more they will get disenchanted with it,” the SP president said.last_img read more

Liam Hemsworth And Jhené Aiko Named As PETAs Sexiest Vegetarians

first_imgThe competition this year was hotter than ever — with RZA, Ellie Goulding, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Waka Flocka Flame all up for the honor — but Liam Hemsworth and Jhené Aiko have been crowned PETA’s Sexiest Vegan Celebrities of 2016.Other contenders included Bellamy Young, Rooney Mara, and Casey Affleck.“[A]fter all the information I gathered about the mistreatment of animals, I couldn’t continue to eat meat,” says Hemsworth, whose girlfriend, Miley Cyrus, took home last year’s title. He also credits his Hunger Games co-star — and past winner of the Sexiest Vegan Celebrity contest — Woody Harrelson for encouraging him to go vegan, insisting that he’s never felt better since making the switch. “[T]here are no negatives to eating like this,” he adds. “I feel nothing but positive, mentally and physically. I love it.”Aiko credits vegan meals with giving her the energy to keep performing, from her powerful tribute to fellow vegan Prince at Coachella to the long days on tour and in the studio. “Having grown up with a love for and a connection to all animals as well as having been educated on the health benefits of a plant-based lifestyle, it made sense for me to go vegan,” she says. “I have more energy, my skin looks better, and, as an extra bonus, I’m happier!”In addition to praising vegan meals, Hemsworth and Aiko also promote adopting animals from shelters: The actor adopted a dog last year, and Aiko starred in an “Adopt, Don’t Shop” campaign for peta2, PETA’s youth division, in 2014.Other past winners of PETA’s annual contest include Ellen Page, Jared Leto, Kristen Bell, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Russell Brand, Carrie Underwood, Natalie Portman, Shania Twain, Leona Lewis, Andre 3000, Tobey Maguire, and Alicia Silverstone. For more information, please visit PETA.org.last_img read more
