Israel ex-PM Olmert defiantly rallies behind Palestinian leader

first_img“He is a man of peace, he is opposed to terror, and therefore he is the only partner that we can deal with,” Olmert told reporters with Abbas at his side.”It will take some time but these negotiations will take place, and the partner of Israel to these negotiations will be Mahmud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority,” he said.Hinting at Netanyahu’s political woes, Olmert said: “Who will be the partner on the Israeli side? We will know later this year.”Abbas, who succeeded Yasser Arafat in 2005, called Olmert “my dear friend” and said he wanted to “extend my hand to the Israeli people.” Israel’s former prime minister Ehud Olmert on Tuesday called Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas a partner for peace, defiantly rejecting efforts by Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to sideline the veteran leader.Olmert, Netanyahu’s centrist predecessor who led Israel from 2006 to 2009, met with Abbas in New York hours after the Palestinian leader went before the UN Security Council to denounce US President Donald Trump’s Middle East plan. The former prime minister did not criticize Trump’s plan, which paves the way for Israel to annex much of the West Bank, but said that any future negotiations needed to involve Abbas, an 84-year-old considered a moderate. “We want to achieve peace through peaceful means and negotiations,” he said. “Let me reiterate again, we are against and do not want violence.”Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, had warned Olmert against meeting Abbas, whom Netanyahu’s government accuses of inciting unrest.Danon told the Security Council that the Palestinians needed a new leader, saying that Abbas was unable to consider the “realistic” proposals of Trump.Olmert “is endorsing diplomatic terrorism against Israel. It is shameful,” Danon said after Olmert met Abbas.Olmert is close to Netanyahu’s centrist rival Benny Gantz who went neck-and-neck with the prime minister in two inconclusive elections last year, with a third vote scheduled for March 2.Olmert, however, said he was not speaking for Gantz.Olmert stepped down under a cloud of corruption scandals. Netanyahu in November was also indicted on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust.Topics :last_img read more

Recruit Jordan to attend Orange Madness at Syracuse on Friday as part of official visit

first_imgOver the past five years, Syracuse has been a mecca for talented basketball players from Philadelphia.Head coach Jim Boeheim and assistant coach Mike Hopkins have lured a star-studded group to come play for the Orange, including Dion Waiters, Scoop Jardine and Rick Jackson.Philadelphia native Rysheed Jordan may be the next player to join that list. Jordan, a senior guard at Vaux Roberts High School, will attend Orange Madness at Syracuse on Friday night as part of his official visit to campus. Syracuse is one of seven schools on Jordan’s radar. He said Friday’s visit will help determine whether SU is the right school for him.Jordan’s list was originally at 11 schools, but he recently cut it down to seven: Alabama, Rutgers, St. Johns, Syracuse, Temple, UCLA and Xavier. He said attending Syracuse is definitely a possibility, largely because of the players from Philadelphia who have come before him.“Out of all the Philly players that went to Syracuse, a lot have gone on to play at the next level,” Jordan said. “I think Syracuse is like Philly. When I’ve talked to Philly players they’ve told me how great it is.”AdvertisementThis is placeholder textWatching Dion Waiters make the jump from a dependable role player to one of the most electrifying players in college basketball and the eventual No. 4 pick in the NBA draft was particularly appealing for Jordan.Syracuse’s style of play and the way the Orange gets up and down the floor are also selling points for Jordan. Playing in a 2-3 zone is not an issue for Jordan, who said he has great respect for Boeheim’s and Hopkins’ methods.Jordan, now the No. 16 point guard and No. 64 overall recruit in the country, according to ESPN, wasn’t always a star. He didn’t play AAU basketball until the ninth grade, which is much later than most players of his caliber. That’s when Philly Pride director Kamal Yard finally brought him aboard. Yard had watched Jordan play for more than four years on the playground and in recreational leagues, but couldn’t get him to join the Pride. In the ninth grade, that all changed.Yard made his case for why Jordan should play for the Pride yet again. This time, the message clicked with Jordan. Now that he was in high school and getting serious about basketball, he knew playing for the Pride would help take his game to the next level.“He’s the classic late bloomer at AAU,” Yard said. “He’s relatively new to the whole AAU thing, which actually is really good, because he’s not spoiled by the process.”Jordan’s first dominant game as a member of the Pride came during his sophomore season. The Pride traveled to Pittsburgh to play in a tournament. Yard wanted his team to get as much out of the experience as it possibly could, so he asked the tournament director to play Team Takeover, the No. 1 AAU team in the entire country.Yard pushed his team to “shoot for the big fish,” and he knew Jordan would do everything in his power to help his team win the game.Jordan was up for the challenge, dropping 30 points and keeping his outmatched team within striking distance for the majority of the game before Team Takeover pulled away.“Rysheed was unbelievable,” Yard said. “He was slashing and finishing over the top of those guys and making his teammates better. He was highly spirited and highly competitive. Defensively he was a thorn in the a**.”Yard said the game against Team Takeover helped elevate Jordan’s game immensely and put him in the national spotlight.“It was really like his coming-out party,” he said. “Everything mushroomed from there.”Two years later, Jordan’s game has continued to develop. FOXSportNext.com recruiting analyst Evan Daniels said Jordan excels at getting into the paint and finishing around the rim. He uses his size and strength to maneuver around defenders and convert at the basket. Both Daniels and ESPN recruiting analyst Dave Telep believe Jordan will be used as a combo guard in college and can help a team right away.Telep said Jordan has a lot of potential, but still has to improve certain elements of his game, such as his jump shot and passing ability.“He has innate physical ability to get into the paint,” Telep said. “I think the next step is adding some pace into his game, slowing down and being a game manager.” Comments Facebook Twitter Google+ Published on October 10, 2012 at 2:54 am Contact Trevor: [email protected] | @TrevorHasslast_img read more

Bliss comes back with a hard right hand and hits Twisted Bliss to get the win. The IIconics are a really fun act, but are not good at wrestling.6:45 p.m.: The IIconics get beat up early but come back, including what may be the slowest spinning heel kick ever by Peyton Royce. Billie Kaye gets in the ring and freaks out when she can’t get a three count. Bliss gets the tag but gets leveled by Kaye and Cross breaks up the pin just in time.6:41 p.m.: Bliss and Cross just won the titles during a Fatal 4-Way match this past week on “RAW” and The IIconics were the first team eliminated in that match.6:35 p.m.: Guess who’s in the ring? Yep, it’s Elias and he has a song for the biggest show of the summer. Elias sings that he’s been in Toronto for a week and wants to leave in a hearse. He adds that he knows he’s in Toronto because he doesn’t see the Stanley Cup which earns him plenty of boos. He ends that he can’t wait to join in friend Kawhi Leonard in L.A. and the crowd hates on him again. Music hits and here comes Canada’s own — Edge! He comes to the ring and plants Elias with a spear. #SummerSlam Kickoff is officially RATED R. @EdgeRated IS HERE! pic.twitter.com/puGPVPMUmm— WWE (@WWE) August 11, 2019Buddy Murphy gets the win against Apollo via disqualification6:30 p.m.: Crews goes for another moonsault off the apron to the floor but Murphy sidesteps it andthrowsw Crews into the steps. Every though Murphy has been on “SmackDown” for a while, this is his first official match as part of the brand. He wastes no time and immediately levels Crews and almost gets the pin.6:20 p.m.: Booker T is rambling on commentary about how Becky is the “The Man”  right now, but at one time, Natalya was no doubt the best in the business and she’s definitely the best when it comes to submissions. Sell that match, Book!6:13 p.m.: Drake Maverick joins the announce team and vows to leave Toronto with the 24/7 championship so he can finally consummate his marriage. Little does he know that R-Truth and Carmella are sitting in front of the announce table. Solid match but needed more time to kick it into another gear.6:07 p.m.: Lorcan follow Gulak to outside the ring and delivers some thunderous chops. They go back in the ring and the champ puts on the Gu-Lock but Lorcan gets his foot on the ropes. They get to their feet and both go down with a double clothesline. 6:03 p.m.: Lots of mat wrestling and hard-hitting to start this off as expected between these two. He explained that he needed this match to happen and he plans on taking out years of frustration on McMahon. Maybe something will change before the match.5:35 p.m.: Mick Foley is on set to talk about “The Fiend” who recently used Foley’s Mandible Claw on him during the “RAW Reunion” show. Foley is so good at explaining things as he says that while he’s been dominated in the ring before, he’s never felt this helpless. Plus, he explained how the Mandible Claw is a nerve hold that he came up with to cause both physical and emotional trauma against The Undertaker years ago.If anybody knows the impact of #TheFiend @WWEBrayWyatt , it’s @RealMickFoley . #SummerSlam pic.twitter.com/E96QjTOlLD— WWE Universe (@WWEUniverse) August 11, 20195:28 p.m.: Check out our predictions for tonight’s show .
